2016 Newmarket Handicap Betting Tips

‘Super Saturday’ runs at Flemington Racecourse this weekend in Melbourne with one of the key races being the Newmarket Handicap 2016, betting tips for the sprint classic found below.

There are just 10 runners left in the mix for this season’s $1.25 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) with Tiger Tees (7) bypassing the feature in favour of a Gold Coast runs on Saturday instead.

Sitting top of the latest Newmarket Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60 for the win is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Chautauqua.

A winner of close to $4 million in prize money the son of Encosta De Lago shoots for his fifth win from eight runs at Flemington where he won the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) first-up on February 20.

He has the outside barrier (10) to overcome, but down the straight a wide alley is a non-issue and the five-year-old will be hard to beat as he looks to improve on his Newmarket Handicap second 12 months ago.

The next best in Newmarket Handicap betting this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival are Chris Waller’s Coolmore Stud Stakes winner at the track / distance in the spring Japonisme coming off the Lightning Stakes third and stablemate Counterattack ($9.50) in gate three with Glen Boss aboard.

So will the best in betting get the job done or is there an upset Newmarket Handicap result on the agenda from the likes of Waller’s Darley Classic winner over Chautauqua last year Delectation ($10) or even the Mick Price-trained filly Secret Agenda ($14)?

#1 Chautauqua ($2.60)

The favourite really does look hard to beat as a Flemington straight track specialist (7-4-3-0). He won the Lighting Stakes first-up, a race that has produced four of the past five Newmarket winners. The outside alley shouldn’t be a worry with three of the past four champs jumping from a double-digit gate. The statistics are right, the lead-up form is good, the class is there and he looks every hope of atoning for the second in the race last year with a win on Saturday. The weights aren’t ideal, but he’s the best in the race and class should prevail.

#6 Japonisme ($3.70)

Think the bookies have it spot-on with market mover Japonisme to run second, one better than his very close Lightning Stakes third first-up. Gate seven is ideal, and three-year-olds have a gun record in the race. The fellow Waller-trained 3YO Brazen Beau (2015) did it last year off a Lightning Stakes second and the form on the Coolmore Classic winner looks good 12 months on. He’ll appreciate the extra distance off his resuming run and has Craig Williams jumping aboard.

#2 Delectation ($10)

Waller’s original third favourite Delectation has eased slightly in betting, but will be firing from one inside the favourite second-up off the Lightning Stakes fifth. Was only beaten two lengths that run in his first start since defeated Chautauqua in the Darley Classic over the 1200m at Flemington in the spring. Distance is spot-on, is firing well, loves the straight and has plenty of upside.
